Sudden Cardiac Arrest Project (SCAP)

Over the past few years, there have been a high number of public incidents of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in Barbados.  In fact, there is at least one cardiac incident every two days in Barbados. In keeping with this, we are pleased to introduce the Sudden Cardiac Arrest Project (SCAP) which addresses what the public should do in the event that a person faints or collapses in public.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest is a common worldwide phenomenon, which kills millions yearly. This may be due to the fact that the window of opportunity for victims of sudden cardiac arrest is quite short; it is less than 10 minutes. Sudden Cardiac Arrest preparedness is therefore a matter of national significance requiring widespread education programmes & sensitization.

Developed countries have made automated external defibrillators (AEDs) readily available for lay persons to use and their Public Access Defibrillation (PAD) programmes have been used successfully to fill in this period until medical help arrives. In the Caribbean, especially major tourist destinations such as Bahamas, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Turks and Caicos Islands & Antigua have been following this example.

In Barbados, we have been trying to rollout as much CPR training as we can through the partnership with Sandy Crest Medical Centre. However, there is a need for more training to take place at all levels and to have the availability of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) in the community.

One of many project activities in 2018 is a seminar,’ Emerging Issues in Safety and Health in the Workplace’ which will be held on July 19th, 2018 at the Hilton Hotel and Spa.

Join us as we discuss;

  • Emerging occupational hazards
  • Ergonomics & workplace injuries
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest in the workplace
  • & more.
